CLASS 11 | APRIL 24 | TEACHING IN PRACTICE

CLASS FOCUS

What does it mean to be an effective teacher? So far we have looked at 2 of the 3 parts of developing an effective syllabus:

1. Determing what learning the course hopes to achieve (Learning Goals or Learning Objectives)

2. Determining how we will know if the desired learning has been achieved and how will we evaluate those outcomes(Assessments)

This week's class focuses on the 3rd and final component —designing learning experiences, such as projects and assignments to achieve desired learning.

PROJECT:  DESIGNING A LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Last week's assignment was to develop a course title and at least 3 learning objectives. In this next assignment, you will design a project for this course.

For this project, identify and include the following:

- Prior knowledge vs Knowledge After Course

- Project Learning Objectives

- Define Instructional Activities

- Project Learning Outcomes

- Performance Measures

- Rubric for Learning Objectives

IN CLASS

• Through class discussion evaluate how the assessment tools functioned toward designing a project

• Assess the example of the current class project and reflect on previous class issues and how they might have been addresses to achieve desired learning

• In small groups, evaluate and discuss the assessment tools

ASSIGNMENT FOR NEXT WEEK

MAY 1: FINAL DRAFT DESIGNING A LEARNING EXPERIENCE

PROJECT:  DESIGNING A LEARNING EXPERIENCE

What are you going to do? You have completed a draft project, for a undergrad graphic design course you previously designated, using assessment tools to inform the design. For the final part of this assignment you will refine the use of the assessment tools and elaborate the project description.

What is the assignment about? Since circumstances don't allow for the development of an entire class syllabus, this project (or perhaps it's more of an assignment) focuses on parts of whole to give a sense of what it's like to design a syllabus. This approach to syllabus design works by:

1. Determing what learning the course hopes to achieve (Learning Goals or Learning Objectives)

2. Determining how we will know if the desired learning has been achieved and how will we evaluate those outcomes (Assessments, including Learning Outcomes and Rubrics)

3. Determining what learning experiences need to be designed to achieve the designed learning (Projects and assignments)

What should you consider? Use the discussion and feedback received in class to (re)consider how the assessment tools help inform your decisions.

Also, keep in mind that this assignment will be part of your final package (a teaching portfolio).

What should your final outcome include?

PART A: Assessment tools

Complete the following:

- Prior knowledge vs Knowledge After Course

- Project Learning Objectives

- Define Instructional Activities

- Project Learning Outcomes

- Performance Measures

- Rubric for Learning Objectives

PART B: Course/Project

Design your "syllabus." Make sure everything is labeled.

1. Course title

2. Your name

3. Course learning objectives (learning goals/outcomes (at least 3)

4. Project title

5. Project description: including what will be done in the project; what questions the student will need to consider in order to accomplish the project; project goals (aka learning goals); project logistics (parameters); explanation of why the project is significant
