PREREQUISITES

This class is for Graduate students in the Graphic Design Program. Permission of instructor required.

 

LEARNING GOALS

In this class you will:

• Become versed the history, theory, and contemporary issues in design education

• Identify your personal area of design research/specialization and locate resources and community to support your interests

• Develop skills and awareness to extend and challenge design education with unique responses

• Develop your teaching philosophy

• Develop the knowledge and skills to design a learner-centered syllabus

• Develop the basic essential understandings and skills necessary to participate in academia as a professional design educator

• Develop skills to apply for an academic position

 

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the completion of this class, be able to:

• Articulate your teaching philosophy in writing.

• Demonstrate your knowledge of design education and your position in relation to it by arguing 1 significant issue, including identifying the historical origins of the issue and current debates, in a 1000 word essay.

• Prepare, in writing, a learner-center syllabus that includes learning goals, learning outcomes, describes at least 1 instructional activity and identifies performance measures and assessments for the class.

 

 

CLASS METHODOLOGY

This class will consist of weekly discussions on assigned readings and/or presentations workshops. Many guests will visit the class in person or via the web. Weekly homework includes readings and assignments. 

As a graduate-level, 3-unit class, you should expect 12 hours of outside coursework per week. (4 hours per credit-unit)
